[glow=red,2,300]A lot of you I know have Wifi networks, but do any of you realise just how easily they can be hacked into? Yes I know range is a issue, but just think on this, your neighbour could very easily use your internet connection you are paying for.... Think I'm joking? You would not believe the sheer amount of AP's I find (Access points) when I am out and about, at least 70% of these are unsecured, which means if I so wanted I can connect to their networks..... WEP encryption is not the answer either, a WEP encrypted network can VERY easily be hacked as well, its just a matter of sniffing enough packets of data and decrypting the key, the answer? use a decent firewall, as well as WPA encryption, a lot harder to bypass for a kickoff. Also if you use a router, change the default name of it and DO NOT use the default IP addresses. Think I'm joking about how easy it is to gain access? I have lists of companies and other AP's where I can get on the net, and also the internal network....... Paranoid yet:P[/glow]

In addition to Buzz's warning, there is a flip side to what he's doing. Apparently, people have been setting up access points and monitoring the connections for bank/card details etc. So if you are travellling around and using your laptop, be careful what information you're sending.

[glow=red,2,300]I will put up on here shortly a couple of pics of a network I have recently had access to, 40+ pcs all on a NON protected network, I did a simple scan of every share available to me as a network user, NATWEST as a share mean anything??? LMFAO I could not believe a company as large as this one would put their banking details on not only a unprotected network, but then share them..... STUPID REALLY STUPID......[/glow]

[glow=blue,2,300]Hmm, next week I will buy a wifi router...is that so risky? What I have to do to secure my internet connection? A technic told me that wifi router is a little microwaves oven...is that right? I don't want my brain to be toasted! [/glow]

[glow=red,2,300]Well bastion, key things to look out for.
1. built in firewall, usefull as a addition to any software firewall you currently use.
2. ability to change the IP addresses easily, i.e. can it be done through any software that comes with the router.
3. does it support not only WEP but WPA encryption.
4. does it have a directional antenna, I dont just mean one that you can move around, but one that actually directs the signal.
5. can you change the name of the router itself, access can be gotten if you know what type of router it is, and a lot of people dont even bother changing the default name, i.e. cisco etc etc
6. not essential, but what speed does it support, 11mbs 54mbs or more?
not everything you need to know, but a start in the right direction:)[/glow]

[glow=blue,2,300] Ty Buzzy for the pieces of advice. But Windows XP hasn't dynamic IP already set? Or you mean router IP? I'm not so expert in these things... Dunno if it's 11 or 54, I hope 54, but last word is of my father (price matter ;D) [/glow]

[glow=red,2,300]The router bastion, what I mean is you need to be able to change the default IP address of it, normally they are set as something like 192.168.0.1 changing it makes it a little bit harder for people to access it, not much but a little lol[/glow]

McAfee's Internet Security software is also good to have. It blocks any attempted connections from Ips to your ports etc. I personally think it's the best one to have
