DAT files are a common type but they are never the same format so you'll need something specific to open AvP ones. I have no idea what though. I can't remember if AvP1 had any mod tools but if so, those should be able to extract the sounds?

[glow=red,2,300]Trying doing a search for WINREZ, also look in your AVP2 Directory most if not all the tools you need are there already [/glow]

I would say there probably aren't any proper tools around for it. However, if you can program, you might try here: avp.gamegossip.com/amp/cancerblack/index.html. Its a mod for AvP1 and on the downloads page includes the modified AvP1 source code which should include the code required to extract bits of the dat files. I don't know for sure because I haven't looked but its the best idea I could find for you quickly. You might also try their forums...not sure what's there but you might find something.
